"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

— Albert Einstein

In 2017, this quote planted the seed for something extraordinary in Taranaki. A dream was born—a dream to create a space where everyone, regardless of their background or school experience, could come to learn technology without fear of being left behind. That dream became Hangarau Akoranga.

This wasn’t just another tech course. It was a movement. One that recognised that not all learning happens the same way, that not all talents look the same, and that success doesn’t follow a single, straight line.

Why We Started

We looked around our region and saw a gap—young people leaving school, unsure of their future, stuck in a system that didn’t see them. Many were on a benefit, some were overlooked, and others just needed someone to believe in them. Hangarau Akoranga was created to fill that gap with compassion, opportunity, and purpose.

With the support of MSD, and a deep belief that our people deserve better, we set out to build a free 6-month programme that gives more than just tech skills—it gives belonging.

What It’s Become

Since those early days—and through all the ups and downs, including a global pandemic—we’ve held fast to our vision. The programme has grown into a unique, holistic learning journey grounded in real-life support and real-world application.

At Hangarau Akoranga, students don’t just learn how to code, design, or navigate digital tools—they learn how to cook a healthy meal, how to lift weights at the gym, how to manage stress, and how to set goals they never thought possible. They’re surrounded by people who care—from dedicated student support workers to tutors who see their potential even when they don’t.

Every aspect of this programme is designed to remind our tauira (students) that they are capable, valuable, and not alone.

The Heartbeat of the Programme

What makes this programme different?

It’s the warmth in the welcome.

It’s the kai cooked together in the kitchen.

It’s the gym sessions that build more than muscle—they build confidence.

It’s the moment a student realises they’re not just learning how to use a computer—they’re learning how to trust themselves again.

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. We believe in growing with our people, listening to their needs, and improving the programme every single year. Because Taranaki deserves that. Our rangatahi deserve that.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to walk alongside our community, Hangarau Akoranga is the space full of possibilities—a place where everyone is seen for their potential, not their past. We’re here to remind them: you are capable, you are smart, and you belong in this space.

We look forward to your journey ahead.
